After their involvement in the Battle of La Bassée the 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division, remained in that sector of the front line and from 6th-14th November, 1914, were in trenches two miles south-east of Laventie where they came under sporadic shell and sniper fire during their eight day stay and where Thomas Wren was killed on 10th November when, according to the battalion diary there was more sniper fire than usual and that their part of the village behind the trenches was shelled for most of the afternoon with the HQ billets coming under fire. |
